580 EX MK I • January 2008 - October 2011.
My 580 EX bit the farm this past weekend, inconveniently when I was on my way from a video session with the video squad over at Deepsleep Studios to Space, so I picked up some fresh AAs for the 580. I had some quick business to attend to in the Space office, so it was near 5 AM when I finally got to shooting. As I stepped downstairs and flicked on my 580, I felt a strong heat coming from it. The display was on, but the pilot light was not, and it was getting hot. So I killed it, and popped the batteries out. Two were kind of stuck together in a partial meltdown. Now, I didn’t put them in wrong, since the display was functional. And I smelled “that smell” of burnt electronics. I think a capacitor blew. It’s been to Canon twice over it’s lifetime for repairs, so I’m thinking now to get a 580 EX MK II. The oddity is I’ll be spending on a flash I use sporadically in a club engagement.
However, I didn’t call it a night due to a bent flash. Though I’d be lacking fill for the morning, I figured for the evening I could just live dangerously and go 3200 and beyond. I bumped it up to 12800 a few times, and with a little NR in post, had usable images. But the lighting was my friend, so I managed to get through the evening and morning for Patrick M’s birthday.
